WCP Webinar Examines the Role of Information Provision in Promoting Solar Energy Investment in Pakistan
The WCP hosted a Knowledge-Sharing Webinar on 27 October 2026 to discuss research on the adoption of solar energy technologies by firms in Pakistan. Led by the WCP Chair in Pakistan at the Lahore School of Economics, the webinar examined whether information provision can help overcome barriers to investment in renewable energy.
The session featured presentations by Azam Chaudhry and Theresa Chaudhry of the Lahore School of Economics, with comments by Ankai Xu, Senior Economist at the WTO, and moderation by Richard Newfarmer, member of the WCP Academic Advisory Board. Drawing on original survey and experimental evidence from Pakistani small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the research explored why solar energy adoption remains limited despite its potential to reduce energy costs and improve firms' resilience.
The findings suggest that while firms generally recognize the benefits of solar technology, access to finance remains a significant obstacle to adoption. The research also indicates that information interventions alone may have limited effects on firms' willingness to invest, highlighting the importance of addressing broader financial and institutional constraints.
The discussion underscored the growing importance of renewable energy technologies as firms respond to evolving sustainability requirements and seek to enhance their competitiveness. Participants also highlighted the role of innovative financing mechanisms and supportive policy frameworks in encouraging investment in clean energy technologies.
The exchange provided insights for policymakers seeking to promote renewable energy adoption among SMEs and support firms' transition towards more sustainable production practices.
